Grow your own workshopsGrow your own fruit and vegetables workshops at merryhatton garden centre

If the idea of growing your own fruit and vegetables appeals to you but you’re not quite sure how to go about it, our series of demonstrations will give you all the confidence you need to get started.

The four demonstrations will be led by Merryhatton’s Matthew Lowe and will have a particular emphasis on growing fruit and veg in containers and small spaces, although we’ll look at different kinds of growing environments. Each event will last around 1 hour and costs £5. Bookings must be made in advance on 01620 880278.

Getting started: planning the vegetable year
Sat 24 March 10-11am

This session will help you get to grips with the best way to get organised for the year ahead, as well as showing  you how to sow seeds. We’ll look at how to grow crops in containers, raised beds, and plots, depending on the space you have available, as well as how to plan what to grow, to prepare the ground and to minimise pests. We’ll also cover sowing and caring for seeds, the different types of seeds, and some of the materials involved: compost, seed trays, propagators etc.

Growing tomatoes: all about tomato growing from seed to fruit
Sat 31 March 10-11am

This session will demystify how to successfully grow one of the nation’s favourite fruits. We’ll look at the different varieties and the various ways of growing them – under glass, in containers, indoors, in grow bags etc. You’ll also get lots of tips and advice on how to care for them, including feeding, supporting the plants, pest control, stress avoidance and companion planting.
Growing greens: from flower beds to kitchen windowsills
Sat 14 April 10-11am

Greens are by far the easiest crops to grow in small spaces and often give the quickest results. In this session we’ll look at some of the wide range of different types you can choose from: from every day varieties to the downright exotic. We’ll also look at where you can grow them, both for harvesting and as ornamentals. We’ll also cover some of the health benefits of eating fresh greens.
Growing fruit:
from top fruit to soft fruit
Sat 21 April 10-11am

In this session we’ll look at growing fruit in containers: what you can grow, when to plant it, how to care for it, and how to store your harvest to enjoy over the winter. We’ll help to demystify fruit pruning by looking at the different methods and basic principles, and show you how to prune to get the most crop from your plants. We’ll also cover how to keep fruit pest free and take a look at the healthy benefits of different varieties.
